I'm Back

I apologize for not blogging in a long time. I've been what Casting Crown's song calls a "slow fade". I had been caught up in the lies of the enemy and becoming emotionally isolated, a pitfall of being a single missionary (or of being single in general). I had no one close enough to recognize the spiral I was in and call me out on it. But God is good; He sustained me through my life giving church and an awesome group of ladies in my home cell group who loved and welcomed me when I felt unlovable and also by staying physically active in a local gym. He didn't let me go even when I didn't realize I was floundering. And then, just a couple of weeks ago God shined a light that pierced the darkness I hadn't even comprehended the depths of. When the light fades slowly, you just don't realize how dark it has gotten until it is suddenly lit back up.

But I'm back!!! Praise the Lord! God did a miracle and brought me to a place of realizing my pain, seeking help and receiving it,  and communicating in a healthy way the hurt that had wounded me... and all in about a 24 hour period. He restored my sense of balance. Where I was unable to make a decision anymore, He brought clarity. Where I was believing the lies of insecurity, He gave me confidence. If you are in a slow fade. I pray you can see the lies of the enemy and attack it and recognize His love, peace, clarity and healing! Feel free to message me or someone else and talk it through. It helps!

Since that moment of epiphany, I have moved to  Badplaas which is Afrikaans for "place of much thunder" but it's Siswati name Emanzana which means "healing waters" (how appropriate) is the name it is changing to. (Like most of South Africa cities and towns are transitioning to the Siswati and Zulu names.) Emanzana is the community where I was commuting over an hour from Nelspruit to do ministry. I am working full time with Emoyeni "Em-oh-yen-knee" South Africa http://www.emoyenisa.com/ (GABRIEL ministry will develop as God sees fit down the road. It is a vision He has given me and He will put the pieces together when the time is right.) I have handed over the financial book keeping I was doing for Emoyeni to a volunteer who has much more accounting skills than I do. What a blessing!!! I am now working with the feeding sites more intimately. I'm working at putting systems in place to make a strong foundation so we can build on and minister better to the children Emoyeni feeds. I am excited for the future in my heart now and not just in my head. I hope you will think about coming out to visit. I would love a hug and to show you around.

Here are our current feeding sites at the AFM church, Izithandani "Is-ee-tawn-dawn-knee" school and Mooiplaas "Moo-ee-plaws" church. Thank you for your prayers. They were and are my life line.

What Does A Bow and Arrow Have To Do With It?

It has now been over 7 months into starting the new direction of my journey as a missionary in Africa. Internally my mind is saying I should have my feet firmly planted and a clear vision of the road ahead. In January a friend spoke a prophetic word that God is pulling back the bow and I am the arrow. So why don't I even know more than vaguely where the target is that He has me to hit? (GABRIEL ministries will work with the orphan and vulnerable children in connection with the social services system in the Badplaas area.) I have visited with Social Services, with pastors and been in prayer and it is not coming together like I would have liked.
That doesn't mean God isn't using me. On the contrary I am using my gifts and talents to serve with the ministry Emoyeni, under the leadership of Darryl and Janine Mather-Pike. I am pleased to be helping them with their bookkeeping and now with the administrative logistics of all their feeding sites & preschools affiliated with Children's Cup. (Kind of blending both ministries into a smoothly running partnership that ultimately benefits the children in the Badplaas and outlying areas.)
But, something is missing. I can feel it but the frustrating part is I haven't been able to put my finger on it. And then I read today's devotion from Angus Buchan "Now Is The Time". Today's was titled "Patient Faith". Let me share part of it with you. The reference is in Colossians 1:1-14 but this is what hit me between the eyes.

"Oswald Chambers says you and I are like a bow and arrow. The bow has to be fully stretched before the arrow can be released. Maybe you are at the place where you feel that you cannot take much more. You feel as if you are going to snap. No, you are not going to snap because God is not going to allow you to. The reason He is stretching you is because He wants the arrow to hit the mark. Maybe you don't know where you are going or what you should do; but He does. He has the bow and arrow in His hands and He is directing it toward His target. He is telling you to be patient, to hang on. Of course, when the Lord lets the arrow go it hits the target spot on; and the patience of faith is rewarded."

The prayer at the end says "My Father, I realize that patience is one of the most difficult virtues to cultivate. It goes against my normal inclinations. Yet, I also realize that once again it comes down to knowledge of You, because if I know You I will trust You; if I trust You I will have patience. Amen."

I don't know where most of you are in your journey, but I know I have more stretching to do. I can sense that I am not aimed at the "spot on" mark yet. I have been having the nudging the last couple of weeks that God is about to ask me to be willing to do what I would not have imagined even just a few months ago. That sense is not well defined yet. It is a little like last year when I sensed there was about to be a BIG change in my life and there was. I didn't realize what it was until it happened and maybe that is true now also. As much as I am enjoying what I am currently doing, I know something is missing. The pieces are not all in place yet. I am not stretched enough to give the arrow the proper lift and direction to get where it needs to go. I needed to write this, as always, to help me clarify and solidify MY faith. To talk it out. (I don't have much opportunity to do it in person.) I am on the right path. And as I wait, I will stretch until He knows I am prepared for what lies ahead and I will do it patiently. I trust Him and am confident that even though I have more unanswered questions than answered ones, He has it all figured out and it will beyond the beyond of what I can imagine.

Thank you for journeying with me. Thank you for praying with me and for me through this. Thank you for supporting me when it looks like there is not much to show for it. I am not who I was 7 years ago. I am more secure in my faith. I am more comfortable in being loved by a Father who gave His Son for my eternity. I am more okay with my failures because He has worked so many of my weakest moments to His glory. I am more forgiving and less likely to take offense, even if it was meant for harm. I am okay to be submissive to Him and the authorities He puts me under me because I know He is in control. None of this is catching Him by surprise. And I am glad to testify of His faithfulness. I have not been to the states or actively fund raised since my transition began because He has given me a peace that as long as He has work for me here, He will provide what I need by sending supporters or showing me how to cut costs. I testify today that He has been faithful. My monthly support is not what I need to live on but every time I question if it is enough, one large or several small, irregular donations show up or He provides another way to handle an expense. (Like my vehicle repair was covered by a warranty and my tune up didn't need the brakes replaced like they thought.) God is good, all the time! So how can I doubt that even though I thought I should be more planted and directed by now, God knows better! He isn't done molding me and stretching my bow for what lies ahead. I pray that if things aren't the way you think they should be in your life that you too can trust that God's hand is securely holding your arrow as He stretches your bow, and that this knowledge gives you patience for this season of waiting. He has great plans ahead if we just submit to the stretching and patiently wait until it is our time to be released to hit the mark He has intended "spot on"!

The Bare Truth

It seems I keep repeating that I am on a journey, but that is the only word that keeps coming to mind when looking at 2014. Being on my own on the mission field has been and is tough. I feel I make forward steps and rabbit trails and even go backwards.  I thought my identity was rooted in Christ and it is but….. Recently we had a team who had a devotional on “our identity” and I realized I was having trouble with no longer being a “Cup” missionary.  As a Children’s Cup missionary for 6 years, I knew what the parameters were; I knew how things worked; I knew the goals. Now I have the opportunity to be a “Christ” missionary. I’m not saying that Cup missionaries aren’t Christ centered, but I’m now saying my parameters, the way things work and the goals are directed by Christ alone in my current situation and that causes me hesitation. I want to hear Him clearly. In living alone, you have the opportunity for lots of “quiet” time. Great you say, but for a rational, problem solving thinker, sometimes it is hard to separate my wants (which can be rationalized so quickly) from His desires. Or sometimes I just second guess myself way too much. So, if my ministry seems to be confusing or changing, it is probably because it is.

The parts I know for sure is that:
1) I am to work with a focus on children and God has renewed my old vision for GABRIEL: Girls And Boys Receiving Instruction, Encouragement & Love.
2)  I am to work with orphaned and abandoned children through the government foster care system
3)  I am to minister in South Africa and at this point feel led to start in Badplaas area.
4)   I am to start with support training and encouragement for families in the rural areas who have a heart for caring for children that are not their own. As we get our feet “wet” I’m sure God will show us what works well and what doesn’t and whether a village setting is needed or not.
Now I lay bare the areas I have confusion and I ask you to pray for the following points right now and any time God brings me to mind.

1)    Should I pursue a trust? I have gotten responses from only one that I have asked to consider being over the trust.
2)    I have been been approached to officially join Emoyeni who I have been helping out with all year. They would allow me to do GABRIEL ministry under their organizational umbrella. I felt a “No” when earlier this year I thought of joining them or another ministry but at that time I was thinking GABRIEL would be more a village type setting instead of a support for those staying in their own communities. I don’t know if God was saying “No” at that time because my focus was wrong or if the “No” was truly because I am to be out on my own. On the surface, the work Emoyeni and I both do will be the same whether I am under or alongside of them, volunteering to help in areas they need. So why does it matter? I’m not sure, but in my gut I need God’s specific blessing on it. To me it is the difference between a commitment and a covenant. It is the difference between being a neighbor or becoming family.

3)    The other BIG mental and physical challenge to this ministry is working with the government. Just like in the states, sometimes the bureaucracy and political games become the focus and not the heart and the welfare of the child. I have a meeting (finally) with the head of the Carolina office and the person over Foster Care for the Badplaas area. My phone calls have been frustrating and lacking in positive communication. Please pray for favor and for me to go in with the right attitude. Even though I tried several times to meet when I was staying with the team in Badplaas it never happened. Now that I am back in Nelspruit and finally gotten hold of them, they have asked for an 8 am meeting for next Monday. That is 2 hours away in a town I am not familiar with. Already I am frustrated and feel they wanted me to decline their offer to meet. My prayer is to develop an attitude of appreciation and cooperation toward them and that I can develop my ministry to be a support and not a threat to them.
I thank you for letting me share the bare truth of my struggles. As you can see, missionaries are not wiser or holier or more together than anyone else. We need prayer and love and understanding just like you.

For those of you who have been donating to keep me on the field, I am humbled and grateful beyond what I can express. To think that He has laid me on your heart to give sacrificially to help me as I muddle through what my ministry will look like and often not do it well is mind boggling and soul refreshing! I am thankful that even though the enemy wants to point out what I lack, God keeps making it all sort. I was even blessed with a day of pampering at a resort spa last week from Emoyeni. I am overwhelmed with gratitude. Ever since the incident several years back with my truck, I have trusted my finances to God and refuse to worry about it. He never fails to either bring in extra funds when needed or show me how to function without it.
And for those that God has not laid on your heart to give financially, He has blessed me through your willingness to read my ramblings, to give me words of encouragement and especially your remembrance of me in your prayers. Without your prayers and friendship I don’t know how I would cope. Thank you! You guys are the best! Until next time I need your help by letting me write it all out, take care and keep in touch! (Even questions and thoughts are welcome.)
Photo thanks to Beth Phillips for the lone flower on the work site and for Kay West for capturing me in my Emoyeni shirt. Thanks!

My Friend

I write this mainly for me as a remembrance and a process in grieving for my friend Rita.

I’d known her for less than a year. I joined the gym last July and started a water aerobics class. She was the classy older Afrikaans lady with the warm smile. She was friendly and we had a little small talk in the locker room but we were so vastly different.  Then, last September she fell and broke her leg. Some might say it was the start of her end but for me it was the beginning of something beautiful.
My missionary friend, Char, suggested we go visit her in the hospital. Since Mitch’s 5 month stay there the year before, Char was very sensitive to visiting those in the hospital, and so I went mainly to humor her.  What would an elegant lady 16 years my senior, really want with 2 American ladies visiting her in the hospital? She was a riot. She was feisty and independent, funny and endearing. Me, being the sensitive type (not), didn’t bring her flowers or juice or a magazine but rather a long pair of BBQ tongs to help her pick up things while she recovered. She loved them and used them often she told me last month.  Char and I found that we lived very close to Rita and took her on a few errands when she got out of the hospital. We then started visiting, first together and then separate. Somehow I ended up coming on Sunday afternoons, “family day”, when she said she felt the most alone.
Rita’s older brother had passed away 3 years earlier and over Christmas break, her housekeeper of 23 years became too ill to work and her only other brother died. Rita’s husband had died several years back and her step children lived in Australia. She had 4 nieces/nephews that lived 4 hours away but otherwise she had no family, she was missing her siblings and was depressed and lonely. We started doing lunch on Sundays and ended up talking about everything. The day she started smoking in front of me, I knew we had crossed a threshold. We just clicked. We talked about family and our pasts, our successes and our failures, relationships, God, fear, hopes, etc. We started working on her financial issues, going through all her misc. “stuff” to prepare for moving to a smaller place that would save money but also allow for her dogs. Did I tell you she was a HUGE animal lover?  She had 2 dogs (Fritz and Stormy), fed the neighborhood birds (mainly pigeons) and even left a piece of dog food out for the ants. She never killed ants but would sweep them out of the house. LOL! We even discussed the possibility of moving in together, something she said she didn’t ever think she would get along well enough with anyone to even think to ask that. I never thought I would find someone I might even considering doing that with myself, especially one who wasn’t a missionary and wasn’t American. But as I said before, God had blossomed an amazing and deep friendship in a short amount of time.
Rita kept calling me her “angel” because with all the work transitions and the lack of family to care for, I had TIME. I told Rita that I wasn’t her angel but she was my “answer to prayer”.  I had prayed for a friend. Not to slight any of my married missionary friends, but I needed someone who I could spend time with without worrying I was taking them away from their family time or commitments. Rita was someone I could go deep with on any subject or just laugh with and be silly. Someone I could be “cheeky” with but also brutally honest.  Someone I could sit on the bed with and watch TV (criminal shows) and talk about “stuff” serious or not so serious. We had a friendship that where we could be vulnerable enough to ask for help and gracious enough to share our appreciation. She was someone in the end I felt honored, not burdened to spend 12 hours/day by her side in the hospital advocating for her needs.
Rita’s leg surgery from September had not taken and she actually walked on a broken leg for almost 6 months before they went in and put in a clamp in March. Rita was strong, active and determined. She did her therapy exercises religiously. She had the most gorgeous legs even at 70 that even I was jealous. And she was so flexible she could bend fully at the waist and pick up something on the ground. I moved in with her for a few days when she was released from the hospital just to make sure she was okay. We changed her dressing (35cm) daily and it was healing nicely. The doctor actually had stopped putting the dressing on after her 10 day post-surgery office visit. Then, what was evidently an infection in the bone, rose to the incision and a week after that office visit we went back to the doctor and she was immediately admitted back to the hospital. One thing and then another stacked against her and she never came back home.
A couple of weeks before she died, Rita had lost motor control of her arms and legs. She was restless and couldn’t sit still for more than 5 minutes at a time. She was sleep deprived and unsettled. She had said that whenever I was around, she felt peace. We had had discussions about Jesus before. She had been raised in the church, christened and confirmed. I told her that it wasn’t the actions as much as the personal relationship with Christ. The peace she felt was Jesus through me. That particular morning I asked her if she had ever asked Jesus to be the Lord of her life. She said no but said it was something she wanted to do. I told her I would pray and she could repeat after me and if she disagreed or was confused about anything to just stop and we would discuss it. We prayed. We declared also that Satan had no power or place in that hospital room and in Jesus name had not authority to torment her. No giant smothering of peace seem to pour down at that moment but as I look back over those last two weeks, a slow release of fear and a more peaceful spirit emerged. A few days before she died, I told her that I loved her, I would miss her terribly but if Jesus, who was that presence of a complete peace, came and said come, that it was okay. After that though, Rita got her fight back. We knew the odds were not in her favor but I prayed and she fought. She started eating again and making progress with respiratory therapy. The doctor had written her off but Rita didn’t give up. The night she died, the nurse said she woke up and chatted with her and ate a lot of her pureed food and ice chips. In the early hours of the morning her lungs and heart started giving out. She went quickly and I feel with peace. The days preceding she seemed not to have anxiety or fear. I am grateful she didn’t have to suffer longer but I miss her deeply.
Her funeral was today. It was good to get to share the stories. How when she thought she was going to go to Johannesburg by ambulance she got all her make-up out and had to have a friend put it on before “going out”. Rita always wore bright red nail polish (“nail varnish” here) and had make up on and her gold jewelry when she went out. We even got permission to get them done in the hospital (except one finger had to be clear).

In her honor today I had my nails done (not bright red though) and wore make-up to the funeral. Rita loved wearing high heels (hated being in flats when she was recovering) and stylish sundresses. She loved to eat watermelon and lemon meringue pie. She hated liver and butternut and never drank alcohol. She loved animals to a fault. She had a HUGE heart and gave away her inheritance to those less fortunate. Rita was Radiant, Independent, Tender hearted and an Animal lover! I am blessed by having known her. Although I still have to work through God taking her so quickly, I am amazed that He knew that an older, feisty, totally opposite Afrikaans lady was just the answer to prayer that I needed. God is amazing! And if He was able to bring this depth of love into my life over such a short period of time, I’m sure He can handle the rest of my needs that lie ahead.

Love and hugs Rita! Looking forward to laughing with you for eternity!

The Road Ahead

The Journey

2014 is showing itself to be an interesting journey of discovery. The above collage gives a glimpse of my year thus far. As I have been seeking the Lord in intense study and prayer and through helping with other ministries (to be mentioned later) and individuals, He has continually showed me His love and power and passion. Even through obstacles, like my broken right wrist, He has shown me blessings and joy and an understanding of the enemy in using loneliness, isolation and inabilities to tear down people's hope. He has allowed me to be in the right place, at the right time to love on, encourage and become friends with others during their difficult times. I feel humbled to be used by God as I feel He is leading me to start my own ministry. It is not because I think other ministries are not bringing God glory. On the contrary, I long to plug into an existing ministry and add support. But each time I have sought out God's direction to connect long term with a ministry that I am currently helping, I feel He has said "no". Therefore, I ask that you diligently pray for me as I take the first steps toward starting a new NGO (not for profit organization) to be named GABRIEL ministries ...Bringing the message of God's love. (GABRIEL is an acronym  for Girls And Boys Receiving Instruction, Education & Love). The goal is to offer a safe home for orphaned, abandoned and/or at risk children in South Africa. It is the passion God has placed in my heart. The need is beyond what I can even imagine. GABRIEL's focus will seem to be a drop in the bucket of the large number in need. But my prayer is that it is the few that might otherwise fall through the cracks and not know the transforming power of God's love. I admit that I am naive at this point of what that actually will entail. But when I came to Africa, God told me to go without ever visiting because He told me "If I say it is okay, you don't need to go visit first." I've never regretted that decision. And so now, I am all in for this journey. I have no clue how it will unfold and I will probably mess up a lot of times on the way but I feel that God is saying to do it. I will trust God, like Gideon and so many examples in the Bible, that He will provide what is needed, when it is needed. For the present I am working on meeting with the local and area Dept. of Social Services and other support organizations to see what they feel the need is for the children in this area. It is hard to find an overview for the need in extended areas or to know which areas lack the most assistance, but I trust God will continue to shed light and show me where He wants me to start. I am also seeking out the administrative logistics of what I need to do to actually start an NGO. Step by step. I have stuttered in His presence long enough about the overwhelming task so this is my public acknowledgement that I am stepping out in faith and praying fervently that in my definite lack of ability and my weakness and fear that He is glorified. May I hold on to the verse God gave me when I arrived in Africa...Ephesians 3:20 "Now glory be to God! By His mighty power at work within us, He is able to accomplish infinitely more than we would ever dare to ask or hope."

Bomake "bow-mah-gay" (women) Retreat
The bomake who cook and/or teach children at feeding sites in and around the Badplaas area were blessed with a retreat the first week of April. It was to give them a time of renewal and encouragement, to minister to them spiritually and physically and to teach them in a variety of areas. The picture above is when they were given a crocheted flower to share with someone else and to pledge to pray for each other. The picture below was the bomake learning how to teach through play. It was so much fun. The retreat was hosted by Emoyeni "Em-oi-yea-knee", in support with Children's Cup, Hands and Feet Ministries, Spark, and Swazi Serve. I had the privilege of assisting in logistics for the meals and getting to love on these amazing ladies, including dressing up more African (head wrapped) on one special evening of the retreat.

Michael's Children's Village
Besides working with Emoyeni, I have been working with Michael's Children's Village (a part of the International Iris Ministries). I have assisted with a few administrative tasks and I help weekly with watching the younger residents during staff meetings. These guys and gals (pictured above and on the right) are adorable, inspiring and of course full of energy and personalities.
Jonny and Bex Gilling are missionaries from New Zealand and the directors of Michael's Children's Village. They are definitely a model of leadership and love for me to emulate. They have been an encouragement to me to seek God and let Him direct even if it means not coming and working alongside them. They are constantly saying that whatever God's plan is, that is what is best. Michael's Children's Village has given me exposure to what my passion looks like in the real world. The ups and downs of logistics in house parents, child behavioral issues, cultural sensitivity, handling personality conflicts, financial limitations and the prayerful hard calls of saying yes or no to new children are invaluable insight into the journey ahead. I am thankful that God has provided such divine and loving connections! Please pray for Michael's Children's Village and the children they are providing love and care for. Pray that God will work through GABRIEL ministry just as powerfully. Thank you!

After doing something that hurt the other, these precious boys at Michael's Children's Village
were asked to give each other some love.
A lesson we could all benefit from.

Emoyeni
"Em-oi-yea-knee" (Siswati for in the Spirit)
, is one of the ministries I have been assisting with since the beginning of the year. They work with pastors and communities throughout the Badplaas and surrounding areas. God's love oozes from their heart with a passion that is humble and pure. They are raising up Christians who are foundationally strong and with a heart to serve. I have mainly been helping administratively but sometimes get to go out and love on children and encourage the bomake and help with logistics of the retreat and teams.

My new friend Rita
We met at the gym in water aerobics and we would get together weekly since neither of us have family around.  Then after she broke her right femur and I had the schedule flexibility with no spouse/children to care for and no large ministry commitments, we have spent a lot of time together. As you can see we make each other laugh. With her broken leg and my broken wrist we have made quite a team. Please pray for Rita's complete recovery and for her to know God in a more intimate relationship.

God In My Waiting

Last Sunday's sermon was so on target that I have to share it!
It is has been hard having such peace about my separation from Children's Cup and a sense that God has a different plan for my future and then finishing March without a clear sense of what that is. It is difficult to not have "the answers" when friends give sacrificially for me to stay here.
Although I am focusing on my relationship with God more fervently in study, in prayer and simply in His presence, I am not totally idle. But I also don't feel any of the work I am doing is "the work" He has for me in the long term. It has been frustrating for me. Satan has a way of whispering words of doubt and fear and isolation during these times. I am so thankful that God keeps speaking truth into me in my waiting.
I hope you can read my left handed writing. I am slow at it but I think except for some of the verses it is legible and easier than typing it all out one handed. :) (Message me if you can't read it.)
May this bless those of you who are also at a "pause" in your life that God Is in Your Waiting too!
I am so thankful for a God who never forsakes me and loves me so much that He tarries for my benefit!
I am truly blessed!
